"A painting for you."
A tribute to Maud Lewis.
She was a Nova Scotia folk artist who was known for her simple, joyful paintings despite the fact that she endured hard life.
I carved a larger tribute quite a few years ago, in a folk art style,
and I helped Stephen Outhouse get a likeness in his large carvings of Maud and Everet. I have
revisited her in this likeness because I wanted to do a more realistic portrait.

Sydney Mahaney, Shelburne Dory Builder.
This carving of Sydney
is on permanent display at the Dory Shop Museum in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.
It was carved at the Museum one summer
and a fund raising theme of name plaques was used to pay for the work.
The spoke shave he holds in his hands is a real one. I just added smaller handles.
He wears a nova Scotia tartan shirt that was given to him by the museum.
The cardigan sweater involved some detail work.
The carving is about 3 feet tall.

Basil Blades
Basil helped develop fish processing and marketing in our area.
The carving shows him weighing fish on the wharf. The tub was lowered down to the waiting boat and fish pitched in. He helped bring about the use of a single prong pitch fork, that was used in the head of the fish so as not to damage the meat. It leans against the scale.
This tribute was commissioned and presented to him by The South-West Nova Fisherman's Association.
