Carving makes the stone appear grey, but polishing will bring out the rich black you can see in the chip above.

first cuts for a black Lab
Shaping a rough base.

This is the step where I define the final body shape.
It helps give a smooth trnsition of form,
form one body part to another.


Jan 29
first polishing steps on the stone
The first steps in polishing.
I still have details I want to do on the face and ears,
and the bottom needs leveling,
but I decided to begin polishing the body fur.
A little water makes it look black now as opposed to dark grey.
Little Dog Lucy looks on with interest.


Feb 8

The first two steps in polishing have been done on the body,
and I sprayed it with water to give a feel for the final look.
